Located close to the City of London, Westminster and Waterloo (including Waterloo East station), the famous Imperial War Museum offers a superb setting within it’s Grade II listed walls for all types of events.
History of IWM London
The former home of the Royal Bethlam Hospital, the IWM is born from the decision in 1917 that a National War Museum should be setup to collect and display material relating to the ongoing Great War. In 1920 this was formally established in parliament and the original museum was opened in the Crystal Palace by King George V in June of the same year.
From here the museum grew in size and between 1924 and 1935 it was housed between two galleries adjoining the imperial institute in South Kensington.
The current location – Lambeth Road – is sandwiched between Kennington and Waterloo at the former ‘Bedlam’ hospital and was opened by the then King George VI – soon to be King of England. The Imperial War Museum has maintained on this site since – although the museum was closed to the public 1940 and 1946 due to the Second World War, where a number of key artefacts were moved away for safer storage.
From the reopening of the museum the exhibitions were extended to include both world wars and were extended in 1953 to include all British military operations since 1914.
The museum went through a recent renovation from Foster + Partners and now includes a spectacular new Atrium at the heart of the museum with stunning views of the floors beneath.
Further to this, there are remodelled rooms and for conference and training events, all with wonderful catering options included.
