Thyme for Relaxation

By chloe howard -

Geoff Lawton once said - ‘All the world’s problems can be solved in a garden’.

The benefits of spending time outside have been proven time and time again, enjoying a beautiful garden or being immersed in nature allow us to us to feel calm, relaxed and at ease. Being outside during the busy work week is something that people rarely get have the chance to do - research shows that people spend 90% of their time inside during the week, so any opportunity to get outside in the fresh air is always worth taking.

After the darker, winter months most individuals relish the opportunity to get outside during spring, when things are coming to life. Increasing our vitamin D levels through exposure to sunlight has a positive effect on our mood, improves our immune systems and aids in the releasing of endorphins.

We decided to look a little further and explore how gardens help us to feel a certain way and what this could mean for those considering taking their business outside of the meeting room.

Everyone knows that face to face interaction leads to stronger relationships in the future. This, set in the context of a peaceful garden environment with fewer distractions, would allow for even stronger connections to form with those around you. If you’re one of those people who struggle to recall a name at a meeting, well you’re in luck - flowers can improve your memory and gardens are full of them!

Ultimately, green space allows you to build an emotional connection with your surroundings and peers.

Stress-busting

Gardens provide peaceful spaces to reflect, sit back and enjoy some stress-free time. When surrounded by plants and greenery we’re more likely to forget about our daily concerns and be more immersed in the present moment. The colour green alone makes you feel comfortable and improves overall well-being. The fresh air and free space encourages heightened social behaviour and openness within groups. In addition, fresh and healthy produce, when consumed can also have fantastic stress-busting effects and lift spirits.

Boost Attentiveness and Focus

Due to mobile phones and social media, attention span and concentration levels are beginning to decrease. Being outside or in an area containing plants has been shown to have the opposite effect, through increasing focus and boosting brain productivity. When daily distractions such as laptops are removed and you’re away from the office environment it’s amazing how you will naturally centre your focus on what is happening around you.

Delightful Experiences

Creating positive and memorable experiences with your clients and guests within a delightful and truly sensory environment will make your guests smile, relax and indeed enjoy their day. Outside spaces are pleasurable and for this reason are often very memorable, something that you recall in years to come and want to share with friends and partners.
